Born in Penafiel, Portugal, Tiago Maia his currently studying in Haute Ecole de Musique, in Lausanne, in the clarinet class of Florent Héau. In Portugal, he was a student of Frederic Cardoso, in Conservatório de Música de Paredes, having completed his bachelor’s degree with Nuno Pinto in Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo, in Porto. He has attended masterclasses with Martin Fröst, Nicolas Baldeyrou, Pascal Moraguès, António Saiote, Carlos Ferreira, Andrew Marriner, Gabor Varga, Arek Adamski, Joan Lluna, Victor Pereira, among others.

He has been a laureate in several national and international competitions, including: International Clarinet Association (ICA) Young Artist Competition, Associação Portuguesa do Clarinete (APC) International Clarinet Competition, Terras de la Salette International Wind Instruments Competition, Ibero-American Clarinet Competition, Paços’ Premium International Competition, Associação Portuguesa do Clarinete (APC) National Competition for Young Clarinetists.

In the 2024-25 season, he will be an academist at the Berner Symphonieorchester. He has also been a member of the Portuguese Youth Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra “Ensemble”, the Orchestra of the “Festival Dias da Música”, the Remix Ensemble Summer Academy, and the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble Academy. He also participated in the European Chamber Music Academy in Leipzig.
