About this project

Eddy Vanoosthuyse makes his first radio recording for the public broadcaster’s classical station at the age of 13 after winning an international chamber music competition for young artists.

He studies at the Art-Lyceum and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Ghent, the Fontys Academy of the Arts in Tilburg (NL) and the Ghent University.

At the age of 20 he becomes a clarinetist soloist at the former orchestra of the Flanders Opera, at the restructuring he is offered the position of solo clarinetist by Gerard Mortier.  Shortly thereafter, he succeeds Walter Boeykens as the solo clarinetist of the Brussels Philharmonic (then Belgian Radio Orchestra) where he worked with conductors such as Joel Levi, Leopold Hager, Adam Fischer, Sir Neville Marriner, Paul Strauss, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Michel Tabachnik.  He is selected for the World Philharmonic (Georges Prêtre) and the Symfonicum Europae with whom he performs the “Millenium Concert of the Nations” honoring Kofi Atta Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, in the Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York.

In addition to this orchestral career, Vanoosthuyse built also a solid career, both as a soloist as in chamber music.  He performs with more than 100 ensembles and orchestras in 5 continents, including the Brussels Philharmonic, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony, Simon Bolivar Orchestra/Caracas, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Sichuan Symphony (China), Central Aichi Symphony Orchestra (Japan), Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra (Czech Symphony Orchestra) … Simon Bolivar Quartet, Beijing Quartet, Chile Quartet, Daniel Quartet, Vilnius Quartet and the Zemlinsky Quartet among lots of others.

He collaborates with composers such as Olivier Messiaen, John Corigliano, Arthuro Marquez, Nicola Piovani, Heinrich Suttermeister, Hans Zimmer and Scott McAllister, among others.  Dozens of Belgian and foreign composers dedicate music to him.

Vanoosthuyse performs for radio and television for BRTN/VRT, RTBF, VARA, Radio Suisse Romande, Magyar Radio, Czech Radio, Slovenian Radio, Danish Radio, Lietuvos Radio, Hungarian Radio, Chile Radio, Exqui and Classica.

His CD recordings (solo and chamber music) can be found on SONY (Mozart-Weber), DECCA (Brossé), EMI (Zimmer), Naxos (Van der Roost & Strauss), Brilliant Classics (Hindemith), AEON (Corigliano & Carter), Talent (Brossé), Gobelin, Antarctica (Hoffmeister, Mozart & Belgian music) , Etcetera (Duijck) and Phaedra (Hanssens).

Eddy Vanoosthuyse receives awards such as the Torenwachtersprijs and the Fuga Prize, for the defense of Flemish and Belgian music.  The International Clarinet Association gave him in 2018 their highest distinction : honorary membership.

He is the professor at the Royal Conservatory of Music Ghent and the Academy for the Arts in Tilburg (NL) and gives master classes and guest professorships in Europe, Asia, South Africa, North and South America.

Vanoosthuyse exclusively plays Buffet Crampon clarinets and mouthpieces and reeds Vandoren.
